Natural material, high absorption capacity and a premium sensory experience: biocellulose offers particularly compelling properties for the development of pre-soaked cosmetic masks.
Claire, Project Coordinator and Product Manager for pre-soaked masks and patches at Lessonia, shares her expert perspective on biocellulose and explains what sets this hydrogel apart from other mask materials.
Biocellulose, a naturally derived hydrogel.
Unlike traditionally used polymer-based hydrogels, biocellulose hydrogel stands out for its natural origin.
Claire: “Biocellulose is a natural hydrogel derived from fermented coconut. Hydrogels are generally synthetic and produced through chemical polymerization.”
A material historically used in the biomedical field
Before being adopted by the cosmetics industry, biocellulose was notably used in biomedical applications.
Claire: “Historically, biocellulose was used in the biomedical field to cover wounds in severe burn patients, thanks to its strong ability to remain moist and gradually release lotion onto the skin, thereby supporting the healing process.”
Why is it referred to as a “natural sponge”?
This expression comes from the very structure of biocellulose and its ability to absorb and then gradually release a lotion.
Claire: “Biocellulose is often compared to a natural sponge because of its three-dimensional network. The lotion penetrates this sponge-like structure and, once in contact with the skin, is gradually released onto the skin.”
A material particularly well suited to premium positioning
Beyond its technical properties, biocellulose also stands out for the sensory experience it provides during product use.
Claire: “It’s my favourite material! From a sensory perspective, it has a very premium feel. I particularly recommend it for brands with premium positioning that are looking for an unmatched sensory experience and a naturally derived solution.”
From product design to delivery
Choosing the right material is only one step in the development of a pre-soaked mask or patch. At Lessonia, projects are supported from the initial development stages through to the delivery of the finished product.
Claire: “We are the European leader in pre-soaked masks. We manage the entire product development process from A to Z, supporting our clients from the very first stages of development through to final product delivery.”
